Pieter is an associate in our dispute resolution team. His expertise covers a wide variety of matters related to private law and civil procedure, including liability law, contract law, collective redress, follow-on litigation and preventive actions.
Before joining Quinz, he was a full-time researcher in Civil Procedure at the Leuven Centre for Public Law (KU Leuven). On 19 June 2020, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis on the role of the Belgian declaratory action in the pursuit of non-compensatory goals of extra-contractual liability law. For his thesis, Pieter Gillaerts was awarded the Triennial Prize for Civil Procedure (2018-2019-2020), organized by the “Algemene Modellenverzameling voor de Rechtspraktijk vzw” (AMR).
Pieter remains associated with the Leuven Centre for Public Law and the Institute for the Law of Obligations as an Affiliated Senior Researcher to assist in teaching. He is also the Dutch-speaking managing editor of the legal journal Tijdschrift voor Belgisch Burgerlijk recht / Revue Générale de Droit Civil, as well as co-founder and former editor of the Leuven Blog for Public Law.
He frequently speaks at conferences or seminars and publishes on various aspects of private law, particularly liability law, and civil procedure. During his law studies, he became a laureate of the 2015 Jura Falconis Awards. In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Ius Commune Prize for a contribution based on a part of his doctoral thesis.
Pieter is a member of the Brussels Bar.
